Pharasmanes Apokapes, patrikios anthypatos, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 29 mm, 16.54 g, 12 h). MHP-ΘV Nimbate Theotokos “Episkepsis”, raising both hands in prayer; medallion of Christ in front. Rev. [+ΘKЄ] R,Θ,/[Tω C]ω Δ૪Λ, / [ΦAP]ACMANH / [Π]PI ANΘVΠA/[T]O Tω AΠO/KAΠH in six lines. CNG 78 (14 May 2008), 1896. Gert Boersema Ancient Coins stock no. 6201 (Vcoins 2010). Struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

Pharasmanes Apokapes, whose name reveals his Armenian descent, is attested in written sources as the commander ('strategos') of a garrison sent to guard the acropolis at Hierapolis. He was appointed by Romanos IV Diogenesand and delegated to ensure that the city could be settled by Romans and Armenians (Attaleiates, History 116.9-11 / 88.4-6; cf. PBW "Pharasmanes 101")
